How it came about

StoryMate is a passion project created by a group of game designer friends living in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

We love stories, storytelling, games, and game design. A diverse range of people have contributed to the creation of StoryMate, including local games industry veterans, narrative writers, indigenous creatives, teachers, and kids. Together, we've worked hard to make StoryMate an accessible tool that is both engaging and empowering to use.

Interactive Fiction

Interactive fiction is about writing stories where your readers get to pick what happens. It's a way to make writing exciting - you can create surprises and show how choices change the story. Non-linear storytelling makes writing and reading super fun and engaging, letting everyone's imagination run wild!

On Education

We have a long history with Games Based Learning. Our work creating educational resources with the Ministry of Education, Te Puni Kōkiri and indigenous communities in Aotearoa, New Zealand positions us to make an easy to use and inclusive tool that we KNOW todays kids are going to love.

Our thoughts on AI

The StoryMate AI Wizard uses OpenAI for generating text. This is the same technology that powers ChatGPT which is used by tens millions of good people each and every day to learn, discover and to play with words. Glorious words!

How it works. The StoryMate assistant does not simply generate random responses. We have spent time training and developing our AI assistant to generate cohesive ideas that support your creativity.

We take your idea and we mash it together with game design thinking based on many many years of game design and development experience. behind the scenes in such a way that is tailored to generate cohesive Interactive Fiction and Choose Your Own Adventure story starters.

The assistant prompts have been heavily influenced by the work of industry veterans like Jesse Schell and researchers from the University of Philadelphia and Gamelab, in New Zealand.

Is generative AI ethical?

We believe that this depends on how you use it.

StoryMate provides an interface for you to enter some keywords, we use your keywords to generate an idea that you can use as the basis for your story. We think that's pretty cool and hope to see it unlock all sorts of creative potential.

We acknowledge the shortcomings and biases that are inherent in OpenAI (ChatGPT) and in AI in general. This isn't ideal but we have faith these models will improve over time.

In the meantime, we do our best to work around known AI biases as much as possible by ensuring that the prompts we use are heavily influenced by our own game design experience.
